I have been collecting and using antique or just plain old tools for decades. I have several inexpensive and used combination squares in my collection. Having been an engineer for 38 years and always admired the quality of Starrett gauges, I recently decided to order a new 4 piece Starrett Precision Reversible Protractor Head Combo Square Set. When I received the new combo set I was very disappointed to find that it contained several sharp edges and corners from machining. Believing it must have been an accident, the set was sent back to Starrett for repairs. It turned out to be a waste of time. A month later the set came back to me in the same condition. I finished the process of making the tool myself, removing sharp edges and corners with a file and a small Arkansas stone. The new combo set is very similar to the old Lufkin Rule Co. set I own; However, I don't expect the Lufkin set to cut me. Perhaps one of the advantages of using old or second-hand tools is that they usually don't have sharp edges and corners that you could cut yourself on in normal use.
