I will never buy peat again.

I have been using coir in place of peat for about thirty. My original reason was because it came in compact brick form. I live in an apartment, and raise lots of houseplants for which I mix my own potting soil. I don't have a lot of storage space. I can store a year's supply of coir in a tote in the closet, where a bale of peat would never fit. everyone has probably heard the argument over whether coir is a more renewable resource than peat. I have to be neutral on the subject, but as a useful byproduct of coconut growing, I can be sure it will still be around long after the peat bogs are all dug up and gone. But one quality above all insures my continued use of coir over peat. The majority of the plants that I grow are cacti and succulents, and the most important factor in caring for these plants is that the soil in their pots has to dry out thoroughly before watering them again. They rot if kept too wet. When peat gets dry, it repels water and it is very difficult to rewet it. For this reason, cacti and succulent growers have long warned against using peat based potting media. In comparison, coir absorbs water instantly, even when compressed into bone-dry bricks. That is the reason that I have been using coir in place of Peat for over twenty years. Now for why I choose Plantonix coir over the many other brands on the market. Coir varies quite a bit in quality, From hard chunks a half inch in diameter, to soft granules the texture of coffee grounds, to a mixture of the two. All of these have their uses, depending on what you are growing, but I prefer the finer granules, which is what this product is. In addition, I haven't found a better price for this quality coir.
