Incompatible USB pinout may not perform all functions

I purchased this short cable with the intention of taking it apart as a proof of concept for a project I am working on. I was surprised to see that the cable did not have a ground wire. A photo I've attached shows a cable I bought after I cut and stripped it. In this picture you can see 3 wires and a screen. The other picture shows the pin specification for USB.
