Ink color stopped working after a month

At first the ink seemed to work but now a month has passed the colors are not printing. I printed an average amount, nothing extra to deplete the color ink. My color printer does not recognize this as low ink. It prints but the colors are muted and it looks almost black and white when I print in color. Now I have to go back and buy HP inks. Wishful thinking that I could save money on cartridges.
