My cat is a normal size and weight, a healthy 10 pounds, and this door fits her. I can't imagine it fitting comfortably into the next smaller size, but it could probably squeeze through. You will need a saber, jigsaw or similar saw and a screwdriver for the installation. Installation is easy, instructions are good. But if you're the kind of person that needs pictures, there's a great video on You Tube that I checked out. I installed this on my laundry room door to keep my little one away from food, water and trash (although he figured out how to get through there lol). It took the cat a few days to get used to it, but now she is 100% comfortable and is one of those cats that gets stuck in her path and doesn't like change.
