Review on πŸ’‘ Enhance Your Space with Progress Lighting P8171 20 30K Retrofit Recessed: A Game-Changing Lighting Solution by Jeb Moorehead

Revainrating 5 out of 5

An easy upgrade to old 8 inch square lights.

For homes with old 8 inch square recessed fixtures, getting good LEDs has been a challenge. There are complete replacement panels, like Lemonbest's, which require rewiring and some box pushing, but these panels are NOT independently listed (UL, ETL, CSA or similar) and cannot be open source, so safety depends significantly from your trust in the company and your own plant. Also, at 8-7/8" square, it's smaller than the 9-3/8" of the existing fairing, which may mean some repairs are needed. But what if you simply replaced the glass insert with an existing cut-out? On a unit in my house that is over 40 years old, the glass is held in place by curved tabs. The hole is 6-1/2" square, the glass is 7" square and it is 7-1/16" between the flanges on the frame. Enter these 6" square modified lanterns. They are square so this is the correct shape. They have E26 adapters so no rewiring is required. Now we've come to something! However, not all updated 6-inch square lights work. The OSTWIN and Parmida lights are 7.25 inches - they are too wide. The Maxxima is 7.1 inches and wasn't easy to install - see my review there. These Progress headlights are 7 inches tall. It will be easy. On the existing fairing, loosen the tabs (with pliers and a flat head screwdriver), remove the glass, clean any old debris and dust from the inside edge, insert the new light fixture and bend back the tabs to hold it in place and hold position. Screw the adapter into your existing socket, replace the cover and you now have light directed down into your space instead of sideways into the fixture's abyss. The three retaining springs didn't bother the 8-inch case at all. It is not 100% perfect as the surface is angled so there is a visual transition between the flat surface of the original fixture and the surface of this downlight. Also due to the deeper recessed construction, the floor covering is not as wide as it could be, but the relatively simple installation, the retrofitting costs (since it is actually a discontinued product from the manufacturer) and the overall light output and LED efficiency make up for it without any problems 5 Stars.
