This is the base unit

This is my first Brother purchase. I used to only use old machines, mainly Necchi. First of all, I would like to point out that this machine is absolutely not designed for heavy use. It has a plastic body. The coil and its components are made of plastic. The machine sews well on medium and light base fabrics. This works well with the walking leg. The stitches are even and strong. I have problems with low tension when using knitwear, especially elastics that need to be sheathed. I had to open it up to 7 to get tight seams. When putting clothes together, everything works fine, but when sewing, there are long stretches of skipped stitches. I read the book and made the needles smaller as recommended. This is the key to using this machine. Each fabric requires a different type of needle. I find this works best with genuine Brother needles. For knitwear, Brother 75/11 elastic knitting needles work best. I think once I learn how to change needles for each project things will get better. The racks of this machine are adjustable. The sticks are constantly being moved so it's decided to just hang them up and leave them there. If you replace them entirely, you will likely have trouble restoring them. The light on this car is not up to standard. Not sure if it's LED or not but the quality of light we're getting is terrible. I put it by the window to help. I am an experienced seamstress. I have been sewing for over 20 years and overall I am not impressed with the overall design of this machine. It's cheap and plasticky, but once you get the needle formula in, the stitches will be strong and even. I decided to use it as a backup and retire my old Necchi. If you want a really powerful machine, this machine is not for you. If you want a lightweight machine for small, light projects, it's fine if you have enough experience to fix stitch problems so you can change needles. I definitely recommend the walking foot as it doesn't work well on thicker or stretchier fabrics.

Pros
  • Constant test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model

Cumbersome, design flaw, keep a tweezers handy, you're going to need it.
