I have experience with 35mm SLR and Point & Shoot digital cameras and recently bought this camera (Sony NEX-3 with 18-55mm lens), because I was disappointed with the photo Quality I can achieve with Digital Point & Shooters. Initially spoiled by my Nikkormat and Minolta 35mm cameras, I took fewer and fewer pictures with my small digital cameras, simply because the pictures were just fine. So there will be important events in my life in the next few years and I decided to upgrade but I was afraid to take a bulky and heavy DSLR camera with me. The NEX-3 solved that problem for me: great shots, great interior shots. often without a flash and much more portable than a DSLR. Before purchasing I read the reviews and found that some were particularly critical of the user interface that Sony has designed for the NEX series. So when I went to the store to try one out, I expected the worst. Instead, I found the NEX to have an extremely sleek and responsive user interface, way better than any of the point-and-shoot digital cameras I've owned. Again, the user interface is actually enticing. Comparing the interface to a DSLR, you can immediately see that the controls aren't always visible and within reach, they have to be dragged onto the screen via the menu buttons. So I don't recommend this camera as a "fallback from DSLR" until you try it in person. However, having experience with the SLR, I was pleased to see the animation of the PASM button. And after selecting, for example, "A" (aperture priority), the aperture setting becomes directly available as part of the viewfinder display. The user interface is immediately recognizable to anyone with DSLR/SLR experience. The second thing I noticed when testing the camera in store was its speed. It turns on very quickly and the delay between shots is better than any point and shoot digital camera I've seen. cool and innovative NEX features that I've never encountered before, and I'll mention two that I think most people will find useful. The panoramic photo function will not leave you indifferent. The camera automatically takes a series of pictures as you move from side to side (or up and down) and then combines the pictures into one panoramic photo. This works very well and is very useful for many street scenes. Integration with wireless Eye-Fi SD memory cards makes it very convenient to automatically transfer your photos to your computer and share them on web sites. When I take photos at my home, the photos are uploaded exactly when I take photos. If I'm not at home, when I get back I just turn on the camera and the photos upload automatically, and after a minute of inactivity the camera turns off. If you're buying a Sony NEX, I highly recommend getting an Eye-Fi wireless SD card. The day after I bought the camera, I went to a wedding in Colorado and visited friends and family. Everyone who saw the camera loved it. My daughters took to it straight away and took a lot of great photos with it. My wife's reaction on the way back"This camera has already paid for itself!" Additional information: - I take about 300 pictures on a single battery charge and will probably buy an additional battery within 6 months. Screen resolution is part of the secret of camera love. You will be immediately satisfied with the excellent picture quality. The flash is functional but won't impress anyone with DSLR experience. I hope Sony releases an improved version. - If Sony introduces a regular lens (30mm) it will be tempting as it makes it easier to carry the camera in a jacket pocket. - I don't make many videos. but the NEX 3 video is pretty good and will be good enough for any purpose I ever have.
