Great little flashlight: welding and soldering

I used this flashlight to loosen some catalytic converter bolts on my wife's car. The car is 20 years old, mileage is 100,000 km. I didn't think I'd figure them out, so I did some guesswork on the exhaust system. The cheapest cost $1100 - more than half the price of the car. Parts are now $300. There were three bolts/nuts that attached the exhaust pipe to the converter. I could drill through the worst rivets I knew and just use a screw. This was not possible with the other two bolts and if I messed them up a spare converter would be required. I took my time and heated the icing around the studs until they were dull red. I don't think I could make them cherry red with this torch because the flame just isn't big enough. But this was enough, because the studs turned out immediately. I changed all the hardware to stainless steel so the next guy wouldn't have a problem (we're selling the car). A flashlight can be a little tricky to set up, but seriously - what do you want in this price range? A small oxy-acetylene unit costs $350 plus cylinder rental. Make sure the oxygen cylinder is fully open. Open the MAPP gas valve on the burner and light it. Turn off the gas until the base of the flame touches the tip of the burner. Slowly open the oxygen until you get a nice hot blue flame. Slowly open the gas MAPP and then the oxygen valve until you have the correct flame size. Oxygen doesn't last long. So if you're busy, you might need a few bottles. Prices vary wildly, so shop around. Locals are probably cheaper.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • poorly thought out
