Review on MaximalPower Reflective Safety Band: 4 LED Lights for Roadside & Cross Country Cycling by Darion Wooten

Revainrating 5 out of 5

If you use them for running, please measure your biceps over your clothes before purchasing.

I recently walked inside the fence line and was surprised by close range gunfire. I believe the shots were fired by hunters in a more distant field, probably less than 100 yards from me. However, after that incident, just to be on the safe side, I decided that I needed to increase my visibility to others. I don't want to be mistaken for a deer. So I bought some reflective caps and this reflective safety tape. The group is manufactured in China and distributed by America Digital Accessories Corporation of Irwindale, California under the MaximalPower brand. Revain is the only authorized dealer selling MaximalPower branded products (www.maximalpower.com) as stated in the marketing copy. Accordingly, my purchase was made by Revain and shipped directly from Revain's warehouse in Lexington, KY. The strap consists of a 9" x 1 1/4" neon green reflective plastic strip with a hook and loop fastener loop attached to a 7" black elastic strap with a hook and loop fastener at the end. (The promotional text incorrectly states that the strip is 2" wide and 16.9" long.) Assuming the Velcro requires a 1" overlap, the maximum usable circumference is about 15". It's a bit tight for a big bicep and/or heavy clothing, so you should measure your biceps over your clothing to see if the band is long enough to fit over your arm. It's a bit small for me, so I clipped it to my backpack. The caps, The ones I've bought have lighter reflective material, but MaximalPower Tape's reflectivity isn't that bad. It will be visible in headlights. (The ad copy claims the reflective tape lasts up to a visible from a distance of 300 meters but does not give details on the test parameters.) What really sets it apart is the addition of four red LEDs to the reflective strip. The on/off switch is in the middle of the strip. A single press causes the LEDs to flash intermittently, a second press produces a faster single flash rate, a third press turns the LEDs on continuously, and a fourth press turns the LEDs off. The LEDs are bright and visible from a distance. This is a good security feature. The LEDs are powered by a CR2032 watch battery ("coin"). (The advertising text incorrectly states that the battery is rechargeable. It can be confused with the LIR2032 watch battery, which is rechargeable but operates at a higher voltage than CR2032.) The battery is housed in an elastic pouch at the junction of the reflective strip and the elastic band. While I haven't tried removing the battery, it looks like it would be difficult to swap out without damaging the bracelet. (The promotional text says the battery lasts 200 hours. I'm assuming that's measured at the slowest blink rate.) I noticed that some reviewers had issues with bad LEDs. So far all four LEDs are working within the range I received. A note for those of us with clumsy hands. You may find it difficult to wrap the band around your bicep and fasten it yourself. However, the tape is cheap and so far what I've gotten works as it should, so five stars.

Pros
  • 4 LED system provides front, rear and side visibility and 200 hour runtime
Cons
  • So far so good
