Haven't installed it in the car yet, but inserted the SIM card and switched it on. It came with a charged battery so I could test it that way. I used T-Mobile's $3 month plan, knowing that AT&T has reduced 2G coverage in my area and many others, but T-Mobile will keep it indefinitely. I was able to send a message to the device and got the correct GPS coordinates. As long as it keeps working in that fundamental sense, that's very important to me.
