When I first used this product, I didn't read the reviews. I just followed the directions, applied it to wet hair with a plastic cap and was so disappointed when I washed it off after 2 hours - it didn't darken my gray hair at all. I wanted something more natural and other natural hair colors work better but leave my hair stripped, thin and dry. So I made another try (Surya Henna in Black) after reading the reviews carefully. This time I bought a greenhouse. I find this is my magic formula: shampoo your hair as directed (not as comfortable as other hair dyes recommend for dry hair, but I'm getting used to it). After application, I cover my hair with the attached plastic cap. Then I microwaved my heating pad (I bought a nice linen stuffing that you microwave for 45 seconds at a time). Put it on my head over the plastic cap and leave it on for 3 hours, longer if I have time. Rinse it off with a color safe conditioner and it will cover my gray hair! I don't shampoo afterwards. I don't wash my hair every day either. When I do this, I am only conditioning. The only thing I don't like, but others seem to like, is that I found it to be more of a very dark auburn in the sun. However, no one has commented on this (I don't know if they've noticed or not) and the softness it gives my hair compared to other colors makes me stick with it. Another advantage is that I can more easily clean the bathroom from paint splashes. It detaches more easily from surfaces to which other dyes are constantly applied. Update: I have decided to stop shampooing or moisturizing my hair before applying and to my relief I am getting the same results! I also only leave it on for 2.5 hours and it works great, but the less time I leave it on the lighter the color becomes. Shampooing made the process a lot longer, and washing my hair before and after coloring it quickly became tedious. I don't use styling products and just put a little bit of natural oil on my hair to keep it from getting too bulky and without shampooing it works great. This is still my way of coloring. When I need a quicker fix, I turn to other "natural" dyes that take less time and find I'm more sensitive to their chemical smell now. My scalp is also more sensitive to other dyes. It reminds me how much more natural this Surya Brasil Henna Dye is and so I put more effort into taking my time to use it.
