First of all, optical cables have small plastic grommets that need to be removed before connecting to devices. It took me an obscenely long time to figure this out after googling. The sound is acceptable for the price. The three tone settings aren't as good as the adjustable EQ, but they help a bit depending on what kind of sound you want. The subwoofer makes strange humming/scratching noises when the system volume is low. I was able to hook up an older and more powerful JVC subwoofer instead - much better. I mainly use this soundbar to stream music via Bluetooth and the sound gets loud enough to fill my first floor, but definitely don't expect Bose quality or clarity. searched. I use this low profile soundbar in front of/under a 55" TV and it delivers better and louder sound than TV speakers.
