Keyboard won't connect to type on iPad

The main problem is that the keyboard won't connect to my iPad. Some keys work (to increase screen brightness, lock, unlock, adjust volume. But when I try to enter text (send email or fill out a text box form) the letter and number keys don't respond. This seems a Being software or connection issue as the only buttons that don't work are those for typing, the backlight seems to work, it connects via bluetooth, the trackpad is ok (a little sluggish but ok for the price)
