I bought this camera with a NIKON 55-200 f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR lens both in new condition for $300. I paid another $45 for mirror cleaning. The autofocus lens is quiet, fast and very accurate. My goal is to photograph birds in low light with a telephoto lens. The vibration reduction helps a lot and I usually get good hand held shots. ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass compensates for chromatic aberration even at maximum magnification, greatly improving lens design. Most shots come out almost perfect. The D40 is the first in a line of famous cameras. The 6.1 MP sensor is suitable for letter-size prints with a resolution of around 260 ppi. But I usually work on a screen with smaller images and I have more resolution than I need. This way I can still make clear cuts to optimize the composition. If you want the extra bells and whistles available in later models, like my daughter, you can get the D90.
