I'm actually surprisingly happy with my tester. Like any gem tester, it cannot tell you exactly which gem you have, but narrows it down to a few of similar thermal conductivity. You must then research other qualities to determine which stone you have. For example, for a light blue stone, these could be topaz and spinel, but to tell them apart we need to consider their response to ultraviolet light. Since aquamarine and blue topaz differ greatly in their conductivity, the tester will rule out a very useful one, since both topaz and water do not fluoresce while spinel does. Without additional knowledge, there is no gem tester on the market that can identify a specific gem with certainty. These testers are just part of a collector's toolkit that works in conjunction with additional knowledge and research. Functionally, my test device works well after two months of almost daily use. It doesn't appear to be of high quality but it works as expected and I find it extremely useful for gem identification.
