These lightweight, small portable radios are great value. They are durable, easy to use and can be used with both alkaline and rechargeable batteries. The only downside is that they are limited to 0.5W output power. My Motorola T600s can output 2W on GMRS channels and reach long distances. My kids used them to talk to the neighborhood kids while they were at home and riding their bikes. We used this 1/4 mile in brick homes with about 8 brick homes in between. There was static noise, but that was to be expected. This gives you a reliable contact mechanism when you are in range. If you need something for camping or around the neighborhood this is great. If you need something for long range, choose Motorola or just buy a ham radio that can be programmed to GMRS frequencies. These walkie-talkies = 0.5 watts. Motorola T600 = 2W. UV 5R = 5W.
