I consider myself an amateur photographer and I would probably be willing to spend more hours finding the 'right' gear than doing my homework. That's how it was when I bought this little toy. I had a Nikon D40 DSLR (one of the largest cameras) and was looking for something smaller that I could take with me everywhere. In particular, I needed something to take with me on a trip to Japan. I spent days reading reviews and testing products in stores and finally settled on this camera. I've narrowed my choices down to Canon cameras because while I love Nikon cameras and DSLRs, I think Canon cameras are simply the best when it comes to point and shoot cameras (small, easy-to-use cameras) goes. So far I have not been disappointed with any of these models. It was hard to decide between 10 different Canon models, but what ultimately made me choose this model was its size and the ability to shoot HD video. I searched YouTube for some example videos (which you can find by just typing in the camera model) and the HD quality was amazing, even for such a small camera! The resolution is excellent and the image quality is excellent. 12MP image resolution means more love and more cropping flexibility when editing (it also means you should get a few GB SD card). I have a camera with an 8GB card and I can take thousands of shots at the highest resolution or 45+ minutes of video in one clip if I want to. This camera's shots rival my Nikon dSLR shots and the flexibility the camera gives you in manual mode is great. I mostly use it in automatic mode and it works perfectly. If you are looking for a "photographer" camera I would still go for the Nikon D40 or something similar as you can shoot in RAW which is very valuable for heavy edits. But if you just want to capture all the beautiful things around you, videos of your family/friends or enjoy your days, this camera is perfect for all that. One more note: the camera fits perfectly in my hands and is very easy to close serve. I was very familiar with Canon's menus so it would be easier for me to use them, but I'm sure you'll quickly learn how to use this camera. Ask any questions you have. :)
