Lightning socket too wide to fit iPhone/iPad case

nothing wrong with the order, but the end of the phone plug is very wide and requires the phone case to be removed to use it! Any other lighting ports I have do NOT need to remove the iPhone/iPad case to insert them? Also, doesn't the end of the USB C insert flush with the socket in the pug area where, like all other USB C connectors, I'm completely flush with the device? strange?!?
