When you first thread a 1/4" screw through them, they require a bit of torque to cut into the nylon insert and of course they don't just work backwards. Turn off vibration. They are really tight on the screw. If you need lock nuts - I use them in my caravan for various purposes as they bounce and vibrate a lot - they are a great solution at a very reasonable price. Much better than buying them in big boxes or at the hardware store.
