SIMPLY, insert a butter knife between the lid flange and the top edge of the storage unit - shake it lightly and it pops open! No leaks, no mess and easy to clean - dishwasher safe - but not microwave safe. I know they say so, and maybe I just did something wrong, but one of my containers now has hairs that look like tear lines. I'm not thrilled, but I just don't put them in the microwave after taking them out of the freezer. I love them so much I can live without a microwave. and I didn't ask the manufacturer for a replacement - it still works for a lot of things other than food. and still holds water with no leaks. find out. I am happy with my purchase and this is not the only set I have. I'm many sizes and shapes, all with the same lid issue, and even with my hands not as strong as some - arthritis - but the butter knife works fine so I'm enjoying it.
