That's pretty cheap for a voltage regulator. It smells like hot plastic for a few days and then it's gone. What are they needed for? If you live in an area where voltage tends to drop, or you have a crappy utility that under- or over-voltage your house, either of these can help with both issues. Basically, when the voltage drops, some extra juice is released and you get a constant voltage level. If you get too much, it will shut down to normal. In summer we have a lot of sags and power outages here due to heavy use of the air conditioning. Sensitive electronics, computers and televisions can work better and longer at more consistent normal voltage levels. Come on, how could this work better? Nice that you asked. My tivo kept running during a power outage, but started cutting the 12v power supply to its internal modem. When under tension, the modem speed drops to the lowest speed and it takes all night to download the tivo guide data. I've seen computers and dash cams do all sorts of inexplicable crazy things when the voltage drops below 100-105 volts. We also have many power surges and blackouts due to constant construction in our area. It also solves some of them by limiting voltage and smoothing out high voltage events. It's not an uninterruptible power supply, despite the potentially misleading 'Opti UPS' name on the front, but if everything you've got is loose, this could get you there. Haven't tried it yet, but if I'm at the generator for a period of time during the outage, it should help clean the power from the generator to the TV or other non-sensitive electrical device. I'm not sure I would put my computer on it. One thing you might want to be aware of is that this consumes some of the current flowing through it, especially in over-voltage situations. Haven't put a meter on it yet to see what the efficiency is, but that might be something to consider if your performance isn't that bad. I wouldn't expect it to be more than 10 or 15%.
