Boblov LF600GSpecially designed for golf, this rangefinder is also great for hunting. The price is in the $100 range, although I was able to find a coupon that dropped it to $99 on Revain. There are several different devices from this manufacturer on the internet and the review you are reading is for the LF600G only. This device is advertised as being able to operate up to 600+ meters which is approximately 656 yards. Pressing the mode button for three seconds toggles from yards to meters and vice versa. When the device is switched on, the measurement appears in the mode last used. The default is yards. The declared capacity is 600 meters. Any instrument will stumble in very bright light simply because the detector is overloaded. In fact, this device has a much longer range when the lighting conditions are right and depending on what is being measured. With optimal lighting, I can get a good reading up to three times the specified distance. Readings won't show up at much shorter distances than 20 feet, but you'll probably appreciate shorter distances. If you can't, pull out the tape measure! If you're shooting at a bear with a bow at that range, you don't need a ranger. There is a very clever way to locate a flag or other vertical pole. For longer range, all you have to do is aim, press the "Start" button and check the reading. For a mast or flag, hold the vertical axis of the device parallel to the mast and momentarily press the measure button. Slowly move back and forth past the target. Sweeps can be very tight, and the range is displayed when enough returns show congruence. If you're posting within a meter of the background you might not get a different range than the background, but in good conditions I was able to differ by a few feet. This is of course a geek comment and has nothing to do with real world golf or hunting other than that the instrument can actually pick up a narrow target and distinguish it from background surfaces. Aiming at a narrow target can be done at any angle, but remember that the laser and detector are not in the same place. The vertical axis of the instrument must always be parallel to what is being measured so that the laser beam crosses the target at the same time when the detector is in position to receive the reflected signal. The accuracy of this device is similar to the range. If you stay calm while measuring, you will find that getting a reproducible reading is not a problem. Again, given the hands-on use of this device, this is an exercise in geekiness. The thing is speeding up. You can locate the local police officer. Just remember that your reading accuracy will be affected if you are not directly in front of or behind his car. I do not recommend a seat in front of a speeding vehicle! This is a great little device. I don't tend to buy things that don't have a removable battery. On the other hand, the specs say the battery will last 800 full charges if charged about halfway. Discharging to 1/3 capacity gives about 900-1500 cycles. Each cycle is worth 30,000 readings! I assume you'll be interested in their next model long before the first one dies. I was impressed with this beautifully packaged laser rangefinder.
