Bought for gardening. They are just the right size (XL) and length. I have the hemline to the bottom of the front pockets of my jeans, and the cut is a little loose, not form-fitting. I'm not sure what the definition of "heavy" is. They seem a little thicker than the layered white t-shirts from Hanes or Fruit of the Loom you can buy at your local supermarket, but you can still easily see through them if you hold them up to a sunny window, for example. I have waited. to do this check before a shirt is washed to note the amount of shrinkage and see how the texture has changed. New, they feel almost silky. Very good. After washing, they lose this property and become a little rougher, like any other T-shirt. After one wash, as you can see in the photo, they may have lost 1-1.5 inches in length, but the change in width was minimal, and the size is still a loose XL. The color has also faded a bit. This is a t-shirt and it suits my intended use, but I wouldn't say it's "special".
