This is the first purchase of Owden tools. It was sharp right out of the box. I tried it without refills and was very impressed. I'm new/amateur at leatherworking so I don't have an excessive budget for tools and materials. However, I'm usually disappointed with the cheap off-the-shelf tools sold at Michaels and other craft stores. So I took a leap of faith and hoped a little more for the quality I needed and now I won't buy anywhere else. This is a good reliable tool. Creates a clean thick bevel. I can justify spending a little more on certain tools and I will benefit greatly from that. Also, from what I've read, there's a money-back guarantee, so I don't see any risk in trying it out.
