Review on 🎲 Fun Math Dice Game by ThinkFun: Enhancing Mental Math Skills for Kids Ages 8 and Up by Ashwin Worlds

A fun, simple game that also requires math skills

My 6.5 year old loves this game and has been playing for about 6 months now. It's easy to play, requires no special equipment other than what's included, and is fun. The trick is that you have to count quickly in your head and then call out "Math Dice" - only he can show the combination he came up with. The player who first moves their pawn on a given board wins. (The board is very small - we usually go on it 2-3 times per game.) However, when we play with my son, my husband and I basically have to hold back to give my son a chance because of course an adult can do that add much faster than a 6 year old. However, we can jump just enough to power him up and make him think faster and harder, which is the best part of this game. You don't have to do such complicated things (you can start adding, for example), but it's part of the strategy and makes the game more than just a math exercise. I think at what age it really depends on the child. My son is pretty quick at adding and subtracting and he can do a lot of things mentally. I know he played with other 6 year old friends and they wrestled a bit. So you must know your child. Can your child add and subtract numbers up to 12? Can they add/subtract more than one number in a row (e.g. 2+2+3)? And can they do it in their heads? You don't have to be very good at these things, but you should be able to do them a little. Also, think about who the child will be playing with - it's best if they can play with children of the same math skills so one person doesn't dominate. So it's just a fun, simple game that doesn't take long. This is a win for us!
