I needed something very gentle that would allow me to brush my teeth and gums more often without causing inflammation. They were recommended to me by my dentist. The description says it's bicarbonate and there is actually a white coating on one side of the spongy end. I don't smell it. Four-sided sponges have different textures that can gently clean your teeth, gums and tongue. I add some toothpaste on one side. The handle is like a lollipop stick and it's very easy to work the sponge around the mouth with as much or as little pressure as needed. I understand they were made for hospital use but they are a great help for anyone who needs a gentle cleansing of their mouth.
