Review on SanDisk Extreme PRO SD UHS-II USB Type-C Card Reader/Writer: Super-Fast 500MB/s Data Transfer Rate! by Ryan Garrison

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not the fastest but generally good, compatible with iPad Pro 2018, fancy

Bought because I needed a UHS-II reader for my Sony 300MB/s card. At first I wondered if the Sony card was fake because I got the same 82MB/s write speed and 88MB/s read speed with a Sandisk UHS-II reader as with an Anker UHS-I USB reader that I had. so far. After several attempts to get the same speed, I tried using the ports on the left side of my MacBook Pro 13" TouchBar. This time I got 185MB/s write speed and 236MB/s read speed. Did the test multiple times performed, no problem , speed was constant This made me wonder if the ports on the left side of my MBP were slower than the ports on the right side, so I tried the right side again and got the same top speeds, it was a crashed immediately and ignored the initial reduction in speeds. Until the next day when it happened again. I noticed the problem occurs when I first plugged in the reader after not using it for a few hours. I tested it out few hours later and it happened again. After testing and re-testing, I eventually figured out what the real problem was was, it occurred every time I put the card in the reader before I put it in the USB-C port. For some reason, whenever I did that, the device only gets UHS-I speeds when reading, no matter how many times I removed and reinserted the card, and the time it didn't work was because I removed the card already removed due to a problem, unplugged the reader and plugged it back in with no card in it. I accidentally did this every time I ran into a problem. So I've decided to always connect the reader without a card, wait a few seconds, then insert the card and do the same when using it with my iPad Pro. I figured it was just a UHS-II feature that I needed to get used to. A few days later, I noticed that other Revain reviewers were getting faster speeds using the same memory card, MacBook Pro, and Blackmagic Design's "Disk Speed Test". The difference in speed was only about 20 MB/s, but it was significant enough to make the reader doubt. So I bought a Satechi UHS-II USB-C reader for comparison and saw a 13MB/s speed increase. Also, the problem I had with Sandisk didn't exist with Satechi. The latter always delivered stable reading speeds. Possibly Satechi is more optimized/handles storage better due to its ability to read from SD card and MicroSD simultaneously (it has slots for both, as opposed to Sandisk's single SD slot). I'm not sure what problem I'm having. The experience with Sandisk was due to the buggy version as I hadn't bought another Sandisk to compare. Either way, I'm sure a Sandisk reader will get the job done. You can just get into the habit of plugging in the reader and waiting a bit before inserting the card (about 5 seconds). Or, if that seems too cumbersome, run a speed test on your reader to see if you're having the same issue, and if not, just ignore the process I've suggested. Overall, I don't think increasing the cost of Satechi is worth it. modest increase in speed. However, the slimmer design, dual-slot convenience, and peace of mind is worth the extra $10 to me, so I'm returning the Sandisk. But if I had to do it again I probably wouldn't buy Satechi if that makes sense. For me, the 5 second wait isn't that big of a deal. If I'm traveling and my reader isn't working, I would go to the store where Sandisk is most likely to be and buy it right away. Therefore, I can really recommend both readers. I don't think you can go wrong with Sandisk.
