It's a hefty unit when loaded with batteries.

This is a DSP based radio and I suspect the brand wants the radio to sound like 'distant' sound by using 'TR' in the model name. It does have some issues (though not as severe as cheaper DSP radios) with weak AM signals that fade out at night. It has enough sound power for most transmitters and has a tone selector. The tuning knob makes it easy to tune into signals that are more difficult to pinpoint to the center of the signal for best reception. Everything seems fine without the VHF whip antenna extension. I can't comment on the longevity of the batteries as I only got them the other day and haven't had enough of them, but for "D" type batteries they should last a while. The device I received was sufficient. built so that the dial pointer indicates approximately the set frequency (unlike the QFX model, I had to readjust the dial pointer to get closer to the dial frequency). Overall I think it's a good buy and just as good if not better than the Studebaker SB2001 due to the simple fact that this "TR604" model has better grip ergonomics making it easier to set up too like most people, it takes some experience to get used to the DSP tuning system. It's a completely different mechanism (linear variable resistor compared to the old variable capacitor, with the variable resistor you change the applied voltage to the VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) in the DSP chip, with the older variable capacitor you just change the resonant frequency into tuned ones Switching to your selected band) is used to tune into stations. When the device is empty, it tends to tip over on uneven surfaces. So when charged with 3 "D" batteries, its weight shifts enough to make it more stable on uneven surfaces.

Pros
  • Portable handheld radio; Size 8.66 x 5.71 x 2.44 inches; weight 1.65 pounds; easy to take anywhere; for example, in the kitchen, in the yard and in the bedroom; You can also put it in a backpack, which is also suitable for outdoor use such as hiking and camping.

Good tone and volume. Good radio and uncomplicated...even a caveman could do it.
