For those curious in Optane, I would describe it as a fast 16 GB cache for your hard drive. The volume is minimal, yet adequate for routine tasks. Eventually, the most frequently accessed files will be stored in this cache, and you won't even notice that you have a slow hard disk drive (HDD). After installing both devices (one in the HDD slot, and the other in the M.2), you may simply join them into one array by downloading the appropriate application from Intel's website and launching it. Everything! Disk management now treats them as a single 2 terabyte drive (the volume does not increase, of course). Read Intel's documentation to see if you need to enable support for the appropriate mode in the BIOS. By the way, I've heard that Intel has decided to discontinue making these products for consumers.
