Review on Enhance Home and SOHO Phone Service with Obihai OBi200 VoIP Phone Adapter – Google Voice and Fax Support in Blue by Doug Bundy

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great and easy to set up

Received a day earlier on Sunday. Connected to one end of my airport and the other end to the base of my wireless phone system. Obtalk200 immediately and automatically requested the dedicated Google Voice account I had set up for this purpose and asked permission to link it to Obtitalk. Obital then configured itself. He actually asked me for an area code so I could dial my 7 digit area code, which I did. I canceled an existing Verizon Fios landline service that had become too expensive. Should have done that a long time ago. *** Make sure you buy the Opitalk 200 series. I see Revain are still selling discontinued Opitalk 100 series. These should not be purchased as they are no longer supported or receiving firmware updates. The tested models obi 200 and 202 are the current models. Model 200 supports multiple VOIP provider configurations and 1 phone line, while Model 202 supports 2 lines (regular price ranges from $49-$69). Note that the 200 is tiny, only 2.5 inches, while the 202 is about 4.5 inches square (both about 2.5 cm high). Note that some have complained that Obi is trying to sell you a 2-year extended warranty or priority customer service for $20. See also additional phone features you may or may not need. I didn't bother at this point either. Google Voice has all the features I need: delete calls, block incoming calls, and more. Thats all I need. I only use my landline for conference calls when I'm working from home, and if I need a clearer call I can call from my cell phone. **I will say that I have no problem with Obi offering an extended warranty or additional features. They offer a great device that works well without it. Some will want or need these services, and they help the company maintain hardware, develop new hardware, provide firmware updates, and support their products. Case. It really is the best there is. Pretty much every other product from Ooma, Vonage etc. is not only more expensive but tied to a single provider for VOIP. Many others also play games and offer a low price for their monthly service only to increase it significantly a month or a year later. Some other providers I've read about online even make it almost impossible to cancel or change a service. Ooma in particular has had many reviewers complaining that Obi Talk works with many providers, including the completely free Google Voice. If you read the reviews and average star rating carefully, you won't find a better option in terms of quality, reliability, and price. ** This unit has always paid for itself within 1 month since I paid Verizon Fios over $40/month ** Technology Note. The only thing I didn't automatically promote was changing the default Obitalk password. Changing the default passwords on all internet-connected devices is always a good idea, both for you and for the world. You can find out your Obitalk IP address by dialing ***1 on the connected phone's cradle. Then enter the IP address into your web browser, which allows you to set up an administrator password, which is admin. You must change this.

Pros
  • callback service included. Application for iphone, ipad, ipod touch and Android devices to make and receive calls to/from other endpoints OBi
Cons
  • High price
