I bought this scanner to scan hand drawn maps and documents for a research project. I also use it occasionally to scan photos and color images. The scanner works well, scans documents and black and white images very well. I'm not overly impressed with the colors in the scanned photos, there are probably some settings I can tweak to improve the results. I think it would be fine to scan images, but if you are an amateur photographer you may need a higher quality scanner. The only major issue I've had with the scanner is that it's *slow*. Scanning a single page isn't too bad, but the printer takes a long time to reset itself, making scanning multiple pages tedious. On the plus side, the scanner is about the size of a large laptop and only requires a USB port. I could throw it in the laptop compartment of my backpack and take it to different libraries to scan documents. Saves time and money when copying. Finally, it is the only LiDE model compatible with Linux. The Linux driver is pretty basic and only supports scanning at the full native resolution or the scanner's low resolution setting, but it works. If low cost and/or Linux compatibility are your top priorities, this scanner is a good buy. If you have a little more money to spend and want something faster, the Canon Lide 90 might be your best bet.
