The best option I've found is a wallet with a back pocket that fits your passport.

. Many passport wallets are too big for a back pocket. I wear 31" x 30" jeans and they fit in my back pocket as you would expect. I think it's about as small as would be appropriate for a US passport. I would have preferred the plain brown leather version, but that's out of stock. It may help to add some high friction tape on one or both sides to reduce slippage.
