Review on πŸ’Ύ Transcend 128GB MTS430S SATA III 6Gb/s 42 mm M.2 SSD Solid State Drive (TS128GMTS430S) by Fuzzhead Nelson

Failed in less than a week. The system components can be damaged.

So I am very disappointed with this company. You see, when Asus sold the Chromebox 3, they shipped it with a 32GB Transcend MTS400 M.2 SSD. I've had a Chromebox for two years now and the M.2 has started to show signs of wear (particularly post-load sluggishness). So I thought about upgrading to the 128GB MTS430S model. I regret that decision. The first sign of a problem was that the system fans would spin to maximum immediately after the system restore during the OS setup process. However, the problem went away after a reboot, so I thought everything was fine. Then I noticed issues with the Chrome browser loading content. Every speed test went well, but there was a delay in loading UI elements, messages in browser apps like Twitter and Discord, etc. Then this morning I logged into the ChromeOS desktop only to see the Chromebox with the dreaded "ChromeOS is missing." "To reboot or corrupted" error. So I reinstalled the SSD. Problem persists. Then I did a restore and the fan speed problem reared its ugly head again. At that point, I removed the drive from my machine and re-initialized the old one Good news: No issues with fan noise when setting up the OS with the old drive Bad news: The same "problem loading UI elements" is now occurring with this SSD, leading me to believe causing another failure to be imminent It's entirely possible that something inside the SSD has corrupted the motherboard (other reviewers mentioned that the SSD gets pretty hot) and if that had happened I'd be furious as this was a $400 machine with plenty of life left.

  • Nice
Cons
