Good for beginners

These small betta tanks are good for beginners or children as they are relatively easy to care for. It's big enough to give the fish some room to roam, and the "siphon" cleaning works to an extent. All excess food and waste will eventually fall to the bottom and if you add drops of settled or treated water to remove chlorine etc the siphon connected to the bottom should suck up the bad. Things coming out from under the stones that sit on a plastic grid. As I said, the concept is nice, but when you pour water you have to do it very slowly so as not to stir up the sediment at the bottom every time. Sometimes we pour with a spoon to keep "stirring" to a minimum. However, a lot of manure still gets stuck in the rocks so about every two weeks we intentionally flood both of our tanks with a stronger current to try to dislodge some of the feed and fish waste from the rocks and hopefully into the small siphon room underneath . We start with a glass to mix everything and then let it steep for at least an hour and another glass can make the siphon more effective. Finally, the light is battery operated, and if you like the aquarium, sooner or later you'll be looking for an LED plug (which costs the same as this inexpensive aquarium) to attach to the top of the aquarium. Overall we love these tanks and the bettas seem to thrive in any.

Pros
  • This is a self-cleaning aquarium
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
