Review on FIBBR Crystal HDMI Cable Ultra by Chris Parrott

Working but didn't solve the ground loop problem

I was advised to buy an optical HDMI cable to solve a very difficult ground loop problem between HTPC, receiver and power card. I bought the 6 foot version of this cable. As a replacement for a copper HDMI cable, this unfortunately made no difference. I proceeded to strip the system down to the bare minimum: just the receiver and the attached PC. directly to a wall socket (duplex socket). No power strip or surge protector. There was nothing else in the room at least 30 meters away. No subwoofers, TVs, nothing. All speakers were connected directly to the SR8015 receiver. HDMI cable between PC and receiver. The L/R speakers still had a very slight 60Hz hum with the receiver at 0dB (I didn't hear any other channels). There were no other background noises. It was very tolerable. Even at +6 dB the noise was OK. At +18 dB there was too much distortion. I wasn't expecting to hear at +18dB very often, but some of the video footage is very quiet and the room is huge, so I expect to hear at 0dB a lot and not too rarely beyond. my $10 10 foot HDMI copper cable to a $100 6 foot HDMI cable. No difference. Then I decided to add the Mcintosh MC252 power amplifier back in. This required the use of an extension cord. I used the cheap domestic model and it had all 3 devices on it. I then routed the front left/right speakers back to the MC252 power amp and connected the front left/right RCA preamp outputs to the MC252's SR8015. At this point, the 60 Hz hum increased, and was joined by a variety of other noises that sounded like radio interference. This noise disappeared when I removed the HDMI cable between the PC and the receiver. Unfortunately, the optical cable was no different from the copper cable. The noise also went away when I put the PC in standby mode or simply turned off the power from the PC using the power button on the back. I'm not sure what to try next. I have not attempted to raise the floor on either the PC or the MC252. I'm afraid, too. I don't want to die from electrocution. The cable worked great as a copper cable replacement, but it costs over 10 times more than 6ft of copper cable, so I don't recommend it and am returning mine. .
