This mount really provides a solid base for ball heads, gimbals and even garbage bags. However, this is very individual and some may find it excessive or too restrictive. At first I found this to be a problem on my 2011 Outback. It didn't quite fit me as I had hoped and bothered me when driving. After a while I decided it was worth it as I guess I got used to it. I've found that I can't go far with a door mounted lens, but it attaches quickly so I'll wait until I'm in an area that offers opportunities, I can with a camera attached and a 500- mm lens drive slowly or just hold the mount in place and then quickly attach the camera/lens at the right time. Overall, I'm happy with its performance, but some might not be so inclined.
