Review on Metabo GA 18 LTX BARE by Jason Paredes

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Does its job perfectly - straight grinder

I've wanted to buy a cordless straight grinder for a long time. I've used Ingersoll Rand IQV models at a place I worked and they liked them, except for the batteries. I love Metabo hand tools so much I waited until they made a cordless sander and then bought one. I got it with Grainger 5.2Ah batteries before Revain sold this one. All promotional images show the high torque version with the side handle installed and the low torque version with the throat pad installed. Mine came with both handles and a neck pillow installed. Don't think you bought the wrong model when you see it for the first time. This coffee grinder serves its purpose perfectly. It packs a lot of power and is more resistant to speed loss under load than any I've used. After applying the bit twice, working with any straight grinder without a spindle lock becomes unbearable. I've used this with carbide burs, 2" Roloc grinding wheels, flap discs in 3" Roloc holders, and a 4" buffing wheel. He did an excellent job of removing, smoothing and polishing the material. , this high-torque version spins at just 6,000rpm, compared to 25,000rpm on the regular model. Especially with carbide milling cutters, this means that I have to take my time. Battery life is more like a cordless drill than a cordless angle grinder. However, one thing is not the case. If you've ever used one of those tiny air-powered square grinders and been delighted at how small and light they are and how much you can control the power of how much air you're giving the blade, don't expect anything like this. It's physically the largest and heaviest straight grinder I've ever used, and it runs at one speed. It's not heavy compared to other cordless power tools, but it does compare to a small air-powered grinder (unless you also weigh an air compressor). They made it so you can rotate the battery and vent part, and it probably looks less useful than it actually is. I rarely change it to my liking, but how I like it and how someone else likes it is likely to be different. Battery and motor performance on this thing, the bearings and gearing on the head would overheat in the first place. You then need a fan and a small magnet that, when turned, generates enough current to operate the transmitter, which will remotely shut down due to overheating. If you have a transmitter, you also need a remote switch. Now the accessory is like a grinder.

Pros
  • Manual, hybrid and fully automatic assembly systems
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
