Review on πŸ’‘ Solo Lights Advanced Electronic Fluorescent Ballast by Daniel Shivashankar

Revainrating 1 out of 5

The one I have has an error. ***Please read the update***

This is the second unit I have had to buy since I bought an aquarium hood about 4 years ago, so it's definitely not the most durable electronic unit in my house . Unfortunately, these are the only ones I can find anywhere that work, so I'm very glad they're available anyway. Apparently if they become unavailable I'll have to throw away the entire hood in a couple of years. The downside I mentioned in the last one is some sort of short circuit that makes me bang on the light fixture to get the light on even after flipping the switch. So far it always works, so I still give 4 stars. Thanks again for providing. UPDATE 07/17/2019: 4 to 1 stars: These ballasts are short-lived. The latter was delivered on 05/17/2019 and had the defect mentioned above. It served exactly 2 months and then completely failed yesterday, July 17, 2019. If I decide to do it again I will be buying 4 of these ballasts in 4 years time - original and 3 replacements. (I can't remember if all the replacement parts were from the same source. But they all looked the same.) On reflection I had to return the first light in its entirety to the local store it was purchased from and replace it with this one, because the ballast was bad. That's FIVE new ballasts in 4 years if I decide to do it again! I think that now I will try to fit a ballastless LED bulb into this lamp. It gets expensive and exponentially more difficult, but I only have to do it once. I'm old, and with this particular aquarium in particular, it's not easy at all to remove the light and work with it all the time. In case anyone is wondering, I have always used the correct wattage bulbs and the lights are on every morning and off every night. I think this should be considered normal usage. I have maintained several aquariums for almost 50 years and have always done so. Each of my aquariums had the same style of lighting and I don't recall ever having this problem - at least not more than once on the same fixture. I have a similar aquarium light that sits on the same stand underneath. It plugs into the same socket and uses the same thing - and the original ballast is over 30 years old! Again - I have used 4 ballasts in 4 years on this particular light and now I need number 5. Please think about it and give it a few minutes before spending your hard earned money. Apparently they don't do these things like they used to.
