I was tormented with envy when other members of my synagogue's mahjong club told stories about the origins of their sets - Bakelite or real ivory, inherited from my mother or grandmother, with small details of craftsmanship and serious patina of the age. What should I do? My grandmothers never played mahjong. Even if I could justify spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars on an antique set, it would still appear fake. I figured the next best thing would be to find a new, modern set that still fits my sense of heritage and craftsmanship. . This mahjong set is exactly what you need! I'm proud to use it when we play and look forward to passing it on to my kids (yirzeh hashem, not for decades to come). The mahogany body and pillars are really beautiful. The tile feels solid and well made, and the engraving is deep enough that I'm not worried about the color fading or chipping anytime soon. The colors are rich but not flashy. I've always loved owls, so I particularly appreciate that the bird featured on one wing is a chic stylized owl. I usually prefer Jewish-American mahjong, but recently I've learned the Chinese style from some exchange students; This set contains all the bricks you need for each game. Only two minor complaints keep me from giving this set five stars: I agree with other reviewers that the clasps are too loose for the weight of the case. It's never really broken or opened up unexpectedly, but I wear it very carefully and plan to install more reliable hardware myself. Also, the thin plastic film used to wrap the tiles during shipping accidentally stuck to the surface of several tiles. It doesn't matter muchโno one but me ever noticed, as it's clean and only tiny scraps remainโbut I can't scrape it off yet, despite my neurotic determination. Don't let these problems stop you. from ordering this beautiful mahjong set. I'm happier with it than other modern sets that sell for twice as much (or antique sets for ten times as much!).
