Review on πŸ“· Black Olympus E-P5 16.1MP Mirrorless Digital Camera with 3-Inch LCD - Body Only by Jay Jeong

Good all-in-one camera

I've resisted the Olympus brand for years because of their insanely rigid menu system. I had one a few years ago and this camera was just impossible! But Olympus digital cameras have matured, and so have I *um* matured. My Canon gear is getting heavier every week. So I started looking at various compact mirrorless systems, reading reviews from professionals and users, and looking at sample images. While Oly camera reviewers generally agree that the menus are complex, the number of options available in the menus and the ability to adjust settings were certainly appealing. I also liked the color reproduction, clarity and dynamic range of the Oly Micro 4/3 cameras. So I took a bite. And I'm very glad I did. What I like: Excellent image quality Powerful in-body 5-axis image stabilization Wide range of lenses Controllable weight Built-in flash Tilting LCD screen Bright, fast autofocus Beautiful colors Dynamic range, especially when shooting in RAW format. LOTS of options for removing shadows and restoring highlights, although this isn't really a problem. Clean images at ISO 2000, with 3200 and 6400 actually being quite usable. :Menu - Settings are still unnecessarily complicated (but not as confusing as they were eight years ago) Touchscreen functionality is somewhat limited - zooming would be nice when playback LCD screen isn't visible in direct sunlight - Had to buy an expensive VF-4 Electronic viewfinder Outdoors Not the easiest form to use Needs chromatic aberration correction (although my current lenses don't cause much CA) I'm happy with the PEN E-P5. So happy that after 35 years at Canon I might be ready to give up.

Pros
  • Solid build
Cons
  • No automatic controls
