For a DSLR, this camera is pretty old, probably from 2006, only 6 megapixels, but it still takes great pictures. Another advantage is that older and cheaper AF (autofocus) lenses can be used. The focus motor is in the body, not in the lens. Even lenses with a built-in motor will work with this camera. It has a very extensive menu with full control over every shot. That would be a good backup camera. It would also be ideal for someone who wants to learn digital photography. Buy this camera and a used $50 autofocus lens, learn how to use it to its fullest potential, and if you decide to do photography, you can buy a new camera with more pixels and keep it as a backup. For the money you can't go wrong.
