The focus motor is in the body, not in the lens. Even lenses with a built-in motor will work with this camera. It has a very extensive menu with full control over every shot. That would be a good backup camera. It would also be ideal for someone who wants to learn digital photography. Buy this camera and a used $50 autofocus lens, learn how to use it to its fullest potential, and if you decide to do photography, you can buy a new camera with more pixels and keep it as a backup. For the money you can't go wrong.
