Review on Dell S2722QC 27 4K USB-C Monitor with Integrated Speakers and Adjustable Stand by Abe Hatton

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good monitor, some things to know when using it on macOS Monterey

In general, the monitor meets my expectations. Some things to watch out for when using M1 Mac with Monterey 12.1. For some frustrating reason, Apple has decided to enable VRR for external displays that support the feature by default. This means that every time you wake up your laptop/monitor, the monitor defaults to 40-60Hz VRR, which is NOT desirable. Some have reported flickering, I didn't have that, but you always want the full 60hz. At the time of this review, there is currently no way to permanently disable this protocol. You have to manually set the refresh rate to 60Hz each time. It is not possible to disable VRR on the monitor directly from the OSD menu. Very frustrating and I hope either Dell adds this option or Apple fixes it. Second, you MUST switch the USB priority to "High Resolution" to get full 4K 60Hz RGB 30-bit. It defaults to "High Bitrate", which limits the output to 4K 60Hz ycbcr (24-bit I think?), which is lower. It took me a while to figure this out as it's not explicitly mentioned anywhere. I believe this limits the monitor's USB port to 2.0 speeds, so there's a trade-off here. UPDATE: As of Monterey 12.2, the vrr issue has been fixed and the monitor runs at 60Hz by default. As a side note, install the Moon app on your Mac to access keyboard controls for brightness adjustment and speaker sound control - works fine. Now I am very happy with the monitor.
