We bought this unit because we have very hard water and in winter when I use a warm mist humidifier it requires excessive cleaning due to mineral residue build up. We bought a new humidifier this year and decided to try distilled water from the start, which would have been prohibitively expensive to purchase. So far the distilled water we have made with this device has minimized our cleaning problems better than we could have hoped! My husband also uses a CPAP machine and we bought a gallon jug each week that we no longer need. I think the time and effort it took to clean our humidifier and replace it every few years was worth the purchase. We don't drink water so I can't judge the taste.
