Pumps water hard, not fast

I have a homemade coiled pool heater that consists of a 1200 foot length of half inch black irrigation hose that I push water through with a Hayward 1 1/2 HP pump and a sand filter with a tee fitting on the return side of the filter have. I have 6,200ft coils on an 8ft x 12ft table about the same height as the pool so I usually have to turn on the pool heat pump and filter which is very expensive all summer long. I bought this little pump on a whim to see if it could push coils at all. Joined and was very surprised! The power is only about 1/2 the rated flow, but it needs to be fast enough to keep the coils from overheating, and it needs to be consistent with a good pressure behind it. Filling wasn't a problem as the water supply line is about 10 inches below the pool's water level. Based on the reviews I've read, it would be wise to get a backup just to be safe. This pump has only been connected for about an hour so I will update this review over time. UPDATE 05/27/21: 1st week in operation, the pump is pushing. I was a little concerned about the temperature of the water in the coils since we were having an 85 degree day, but the pump was able to move the water fast enough that it didn't boil. The peak temperature emanating from the coils was only 104 degrees. No problem with the small pump. This pump takes about 12 minutes to cycle through the coils, while the filter pump only takes about 9 minutes. Opening day is this weekend (Memorial Day), so it will be put to the test with even higher daily rates. 1 MONTH UPDATE 06/16/21 Still chugging! We had record temperatures last week and I measured the temperature of the water entering the pool at around 140F. It's been almost 4 weeks and the only difference is that the pump is running a little warmer, but that could be due to the higher ambient temperature this week. The pool temperature is 94F and rising every day. With these warmer pool temperatures, we swim at night. I love it when the pool heats as much as it wants and when the daytime temperatures drop at the end of the season or we have overcast days the extra warmth is appreciated. When we have pool events like the 4th of July I will cover the coils with a tarp to cool them down a bit if needed. Further updates will be released as needed. Father's Day The pool was a comfortable 95F when the whole family entered it. When there were 10-12 people in the pool I turned on the normal pump and filter. The small pump lets the pressure of the pool pump pass when it is not needed. Accident the previous day: Between 2pm and 3.30pm on Saturday while the small pump was doing its job, the hose on the inlet side of the pump where it connects to the pool line became very hot due to outside air temperatures around 100F. that the hose had slipped from the connection to the pool causing the small pump to work but not pushing water through the heater and pool water spilled onto the floor next to the pool. By the time I noticed this the pool had lost 3/4 inch of water and the heating coils were very close to boiling. I quickly reattached the line and turned on the pool filter, which started pushing water through the coils again. I lifted the hot water inlet out of the pool to check the flow and couldn't believe the amount of vapor (steam) coming out of the water from the hose which was almost impossible to hold for more than a few seconds. When the water cooled back to NORMAL I let the little pump take over again (nice little pump!). So even after I had to pump the water dry, the little pump worked again.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
