Review on πŸ” CNZ Universal Media Filter Bag: Optimal Ammonia Removal with Bio-Balls, Ceramic Rings, and Pellet Carbon by Crystal Forrest

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The best bag (but not perfect) for its intended purpose

CNZ Universal Ammonia Removal Filter Bag Bioball Ceramic Ring and Granular Carbon 3-Pack. Sold by CNZ Lighting, made by Revain This mesh bag is made from nylon with the same weave pattern as the laundry bag for delicate garments. The holes in the mesh have an average diameter of 2-3mm and can easily be stretched into an oval shape up to 4mm wide. Why this bag was not designed and WILL NOT work: 1. Anything less than 3mm in diameter will come out of this bag, 2. Marineland Diamond-Blend Carbon/Ammonia Crystal Blend will NOT work; Most of the carbon comes out of the bag. However, the ammonia crystal remains in the bag.3. Activated charcoal brands Hagen AquaClear and Fluval will cure from this pouch.4. SeaChem Purigen RUN from this bag. Pros: This bag is durable, much stronger than all these totes I've used before: Hagen AquaClear nylon bag - very weak, tears easily at seams when filled with bio rings. Accrul Media Sack - Better than Hagen, but still weak when filled with Biomedia and Crushed Lava Rocks. Cons: Although the zipper teeth are plastic (good), the zipper itself is cheap white painted metal (not good). . I ended up ripping the zipper off with pliers which means opening/closing the pockets would be a little awkward but eliminated the potential risk of the white paint in my tank peeling and dissolving or the metal rusting and toxic oxides releases. . The metal zipper prevented me from getting 5 stars. I recommend this bag and its larger version. This is the most durable water bag I've found. I've used it to store SeaChem Matrix, Marineland Ammonia Crystals; Ceramic hex pre-filter rings and Fluval bio rings, crushed lava rock, zeolite, etc. Even when fully filled and submerged in water, I can still easily pick them up by a corner without fear of tearing at the seams. replaced all my other branded media pouches with these pouches and currently use about 10 pouches in 3 different sizes. Correction to my original review above: Both Seachem "Phosguard" and "SeaGel" WILL RUIN from this bag. For these smaller media (less than 3mm diameter) I recommend using the "Acurel Filter Lifeguard Media Bag", it's not that strong so don't over-stuff it, handle with care and it will work great.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Requires an outlet
