Although many banks are now using imaging technologies, some still use scanners, so using this magnetic toner is important. This allows me to print my own receipts. As a graphic designer, I wanted to use my own designs, but receipt printing was too expensive. I have a small HP laser that I pop this cartridge into when I'm printing checks, then I replace it with a regular black cartridge for everyday documents. The advantage of laser printers is that the cartridges do not dry out like in inkjet printers, so the cartridges last longer. I also have a color inkjet printer that I use primarily to print images on receipts (I use blank receipts that I bought at an office supply store). After I print the images, I run them through a laser printer with MICR toner to print black text that contains a code at the bottom that scanners at financial institutions can read.
