The joy of using a serious quality tool

So my Ford Escape's low tire pressure warning light comes on. When I get home, I turn on the air compressor and hang my Power Tank tire inflator on the stem. It has a beautiful large yellow dial floating in oil. The rear driver tire says 20 lbs. Aha! I found the culprit. I start feeding him air and he slowly goes up to 25 and then stays at that level as long as enough air comes in. What? Do I have a tire leak? But I can't hear any hissing, and if it's leaking that hard there must be a hissing. So I get my Longacre digital gauge, put it on and see it read 50lbs! Wow! Not only is the Power Tank gauge buggy, it could have caused me real problems. I did a lot of research and found a new tire inflator from Steelman that promises to be less than a quarter pound accurate. It meets the new California standards for pressure gauges that professional shops like Les Schwab are required to use. It even compensates for temperature. That's $146! I order it from Revain. He arrives today. Well built all steel construction. Very large digital manometer. A plastic card guide is attached to the fountain pen with a metal bracelet. Connect and use. Wow! It fills the tire much faster than the old one. No hiss. Just a very fast stream of air. The rotating cartridge does not let air through. Easy to keep in place. It is measured to the 1/10th of a pound. I set it at 36 pounds and checked it with a Longacre gauge. 36 on the nose. Of course, Longacre only guarantees accuracy to within 1/2 pound, but it's nice to get that confirmation nonetheless. The Steelman is really amazingly well designed and well built. I think you would say for $146 it's better to be! Does the homeowner need such an advanced sensor? Of course not. You can get fairly accurate tire inflation for a lot less than it costs. So what's the point? For someone like me who loves quality tools, it's just nice to have the pleasure of using something that does its job so well. The matter is settled. If you are really serious about cars or own a body shop, this is not a problem. Take one and enjoy.
