Bucking the usual tendency for photo enthusiasts to jump on the bandwagon with more megapixels, more sophisticated autofocus, face detection, 4k video, etc., I decided to find a modern digital equivalent of the original one Nikon F or Canon A1 which was fully manual. Of course, none of these companies make cameras like this anymore, although to some extent you can at least put any DSLR or mirrorless camera into quasi-manual mode. When I discovered the Fujifilm EX-1, I was delighted at how well its fully manual setup mimicked old film cameras. I was also pleased to find out how well the EX-1 (and the slightly newer EX-2 and EX-2 models) work with the old, outdated prime film camera lenses of which I own many. This adapter is nothing but a mechanical connection to the Nikon bayonet mount on the end of the lens and the Fuji X mount on the end of the camera body. Because there are no physical or electronic connections, the adapter works best with older lenses that have a fully mechanical aperture, focus and (if applicable) zoom ring, as opposed to the wired connection common to modern lenses. If you use an older lens, you as a photographer have full creative control over all these features, just like in the early days of photography. Fujifilm's EX series cameras are particularly well suited to quickly switching from automatic use to handing over all settings to the user. IN USE If you've ever photographed with an old film range finder or non-automated film SLR, you'll love the feeling. Using this adapter with an outdated prime lens like the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 lens and in full control brings back the joy of photography that today's automatic digital cameras have all but erased. Considering the price, the build and finish of this adapter and its fit for my camera are impressive as it is all metal and weighs almost 96g, but remember that how it works is very dependent on the particular lens you are using it with found that it works. best with fully manual prime lenses. Before basing your decision on whether others say it's too loose or too tight, consider that the adapter might be fine, they're all made the same, but your camera or lens might be slightly misaligned. DOCUMENTATION I wasn't expecting any documentation and was surprised when I received a small but clearly written and helpful instruction manual which, among other things, explained how to set the camera controls and that if the lens doesn't have a manual aperture ring, the iris will default set to minimum aperture. SUMMARY Put this in the category of an interesting gadget to experiment with, not a serious photography accessory. Breathing new life into old obsolete lenses, which in some cases are better than one could ever hope to buy new these days, is a worthwhile endeavor, as is getting back to the basics of photography without the help of automation. I recommend it.
