Review on Thunderbolt 3 Dual-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure with Thunderbolt 2 Compatibility for New M1 CPU by John Hickey

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Update: Works great with M1, Big Sur 11.4 Please check the SSD compatibility list!

Update: After posting my first review I found some issues with the Sabrent Rocket 4. I usually leave my M1 iMac on all the time because I use it as a music server, so I do not immediately notice the problem. The problems with Rocket surfaced when I tried to put my iMac to sleep. The iMac sleeps for about a minute and then restarts. After a reboot everything is fine until it goes back to sleep and then the process repeats itself. I also noticed that the Rocket heats up all the time. It was very hot even after leaving the iMac idle for several hours. During active use, the drive got too hot to comfortably hold in hand. I chose the Samsung 980 Pro because this drive is shown as 100% compatible in the compatibility list in the product images. So far the 980 works better. It runs noticeably slower and my iMac sleeps and wakes up with no issues. It's also slightly faster, with a consistent 2800 writes and 2700 reads on Blackmagic. Blackmagic results for Rocket will change more frequently. Some requirements will be significantly lower than others. First review: I bought this to use as an external drive for my M1 iMac. Combine it with the high-performance 1TB Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0 Gen4 PCIe M.2 Internal SSD (SB-ROCKET-NVMe4-1TB) for lightning-fast results. When using Blackmagic, this external drive works similar to an internal SSD. After I ordered I saw that there might be an incompatibility with Rocket 4, but it works great for me. The case is of very good quality. It's machined aluminum, a very simple and understated design that goes well with my Mac. It gets very hot with prolonged use, which is good. It transfers heat from the SSD to the case to cool the SSD.

Pros
  • Sturdy finish
Cons
  • Something's wrong
